Can I Trust ChatGPT to Choose My Paint Colors?

The short answer: trust it for ideas, not for decisions. ChatGPT is genuinely good at suggesting color directions, naming popular paints, and building a starting palette in seconds. But it cannot see your home, and paint colors succeed or fail based on three things AI has no access to: your light exposure, your floors and fixed elements, and how a color's undertone behaves in your specific space. Use AI to explore. Verify before you buy.
I'm a color consultant, and in the past year more and more of my clients have arrived with a palette that ChatGPT built for them. Some of those palettes are surprisingly good starting points. Almost none of them are ready to paint. Here's why.
What AI gets right
AI knows the paint market. Ask it for "warm neutrals for a modern farmhouse" and it will correctly name Sherwin-Williams Accessible Beige (SW 7036), Alabaster (SW 7008), or Benjamin Moore White Dove (OC-17), genuinely popular, well-loved colors. It's fast, it's free, and as a brainstorming tool it has real value. If you're starting from zero, it will get you from "I have no idea" to "I have a direction" faster than hours on Pinterest.
What AI gets wrong
It doesn't know your light exposure. A north-facing room receives cool, blue-shifted light all day. In that light, a gray with a violet undertone, even a beloved one, reads distinctly purple on the wall. A south-facing room does the opposite: it warms everything up, and a beige that looked quiet in the store can turn unexpectedly yellow. ChatGPT will recommend the same "perfect greige" for both rooms, because it has never seen either of them.
It can't read undertones against your floors. Every fixed element in your home, oak floors, travertine tile, cherry cabinets, has an undertone. The single most expensive paint mistake I see is a wall color whose undertone fights the floor: a green-gray against yellow-toned oak, a pink-beige against orange-toned wood. This clash is invisible in a color list. It is glaring on a wall.
It ignores LRV. Light Reflectance Value measures how much light a color actually reflects, from 0 (black) to 100 (pure white). It's the difference between a color that keeps a dim room breathing (LRV 60+) and one that visually shrinks it. AI mentions colors; it almost never reasons about whether their LRV suits the actual light in the actual room.
So how should you use AI for paint colors?
Use it to explore. Ask for directions, moods, combinations. Collect names.
Then check every color against reality: your room's exposure (north/south/east/west), your floors and fixed elements, and the LRV of each color (it's printed on most brand websites).
Sample before you commit, on different walls, viewed at morning and evening.
